The Missouri cousins went to visit the Oklahoma cousins over Labor Day weekend. The three-year olds were perfect playmates. They had so much fun bouncing on the trampoline, riding horses, playing cars and just generally running wild all weekend. Hannah is so excited to have more cousins to play with. The nine-year old had fun "mothering" the seven-month old, an arrangement that benefited them both, not to mention me. :) While the small fry were entertaining themselves, us old folks got to catch up some.
I printed off an outline map of the United States for Hannah. We talked about each of the states as we colored them. I made a big star to mark the location of our hometown. Hannah can point to Missouri and Oklahoma ("the pointy one"?) on the map. She says Idaho is "pointy" too, so it must be the panhandle that she is describing.

Fine looking kids!
I love the "pointy" states. Is Florida not included? It doesn't really point AT much maybe.
Florida was the last state we got to so she was a little distracted by that point. She didn't really notice Florida had a panhandle. Nor Texas, for that matter. But Oklahoma and Idaho were very intriguing. It funny to think she already understand the purpose of maps. She knows the lines are roads that we travel to get from one place to the next. Like Daddy says, "She is too smart for MY own good".
It was interesting to see the difference in Hannah and her cousin. He is almost 8 months older than she is and he seems older. I think it is because Hannah is shy and timid and somewhat less adventurous. For instance, she would never play in the loose dirt at the horses feet because she's afraid of them, albeit a healthy fear. She wouldn't climb a tree yet either but her cousin was hanging from a branch in the front yard waving us off as we left for home. It might be the difference between boys and girls too. Because her girl cousin that is 14 months older than her doesn't seem very much older most of the time.
